The staff is of the principle weapons of kung fu, being simple and complimentary to one's empty hand technique (one end blocks, the other follows through with a strike). This long pole is crafted of red oak, a relatively stiff, strong wood that is well suited for training because of its weight. With rigidity, however, comes brittleness, and the staff can splinter in struck too hard upon the ground.
